VIRGINIA TRIOLI (ABC 702 presenter): Do you think the Greens are on the right track here with their [drug] policy?

DR WODAK (Director of Drug and Alcohol Services at St Vincent’s Hospital): Yes, I do. Yes I do … … the plain fact is that, whether we like it or not, the war on drugs has failed, and failed miserably.

About the Greens

Our membership is made up of people from most walks of life, religion and cultural backgrounds. We have a strong environmental ethic but we are not all ‘tree huggers’

The Greens vision for the future is based on 4 principles:
1 Ecological sustainability
2 Social equity and economic justice
3 Grassroots democracy
4 Nonviolence and disarmament

Our drugs policy is about minimising the harm done to the victims of all forms of drug abuse. Get the facts

We do not oppose hazard reduction burns, we believe in a sustainable fire management program.

We do not oppose development but do oppose bad unsustainable and over development.

How Debbie Robertson will make a difference

Housing

• Have at least 10% of all new housing developments affordable (no more than 25% of income) for low and middle income earners.
• Make rent more affordable.
• Change tenancy laws to restrict rent increases and protect tenants rights
• Adequate funding for emergency, youth and refuge accommodation and long-term supported accommodation for those who have high needs eg. the mentally ill.

Education

• Address the $140 million shortfall in school maintenance. Improve facilities at local schools eg. Air-conditioning, computers, libraries and school halls. Reduce class sizes.
• Increase before and after school services and 2 years free preschool.
• Fund more school counsellors and student support services.
• Greatly increase resources for children with special needs and learning and behavioural difficulties.
• Additional funds for TAFE and an end to course fees and charges

Health

• Reduce emergency dept. waiting times by training more Doctors and Nurses.
• Increased funding for mental health services to satisfy acute and community care needs and including a mental health unit at Mt Druitt Hospital.
• Improved access to dental health care for all.
• Improve access to drug and alcohol treatment programs.
• Upgrade Mt Druitt Hospital.
• Improve respite and services for carers.

Workers Rights

• Protect as many workers as possible from Howard IR changes. Debnam has promised to hand NSW workers rights over to Howard.
• Protect the rights of injured workers to receive fair compensation for workplace injuries.
• Support the right of workers to take industrial action and collectively bargain. • Legislative protection of casual workers from exploitation.

Transport

• More user friendly (airconditioned, wheelchair and stroller accessible) buses with more frequent and night-time services.
• No Private Tollroads and an extensive light-rail network for the whole of Sydney.
• One ticket travel and extend concession fares.
• Address transport equity in Sydney by extending public transport options in western Sydney

Climate Change

• Phase out polluting coal-fired power stations. There is no such thing as ‘clean coal’.
• No nuclear power stations. They are unsafe, inefficient and will have to be heavily subsidised by taxpayers. Wind and solar are a much better, cleaner option.
• Support renewable energy options by providing greater rebates for solar panels, hot water systems, energy efficient appliances and rain water tanks.
• Protect open spaces and local native bushland.
• Reduce vehicle emissions by improving the public transport system.
